Century of Cinema

About Century of Cinema

Century of Cinema is a one-man journey through the history of film - month by month, year by year, decade by decade - starting in 1930 and aiming to reach 2029 by the end of the decade. It's a quest to watch one hundred years of movies in one decade. It's a mission to discover forgotten gems, experience all-time classics, and perhaps endure some curiousities, while charting my way through the evolution of the film.

The project began with a simple idea: what if I dedicate each month to watching films from a particular year? And in the following month, move to the next year? And so, in March 2020, I began with the movies of 1930 - a time when talkies were still finding their voice. In April 2020 I moved onwards to 1931, then 1932 in May 2020, and so on, reaching 1939 by December 2020. As there are twelve months in a year, and only ten in a decade, I take a break each January and February, continuing my movie odyssey from March. In 2021 I watched movies from the 1940s. In 2022, it was the 1950s, in 2023 the sixties, 2024 was the seventies and now, 2025, it's the turn of the 1980s.

The idea turned into a spreadsheet. Then into a passion. Then, inevitably, into this website - because if you're going to do something absurdly ambitious, you might as well document it.

Each film entry provides info about when I watched it, some casual commentary with personal reflections, a spot of trivia, and maybe a sprinkling of spoilers. And, for extra insights from my journey, there's also a blog.

This site is a celebration of storytelling on screen. Thanks for joining me on this time-travelling movie marathon. One hundred years. One hundred perspectives. And perhaps 101 Dalmations. Actually, that's a film I didn't watch.
